| James W. Swoger was born in 1918. At the age of six he was given a few small hand tools and began building props. James and Melbourne Christopher were in the same unit in the U.S.O. during the first world war. He is in Who's Who, has won numerous awards and is a cornerstone to the magic community.
Natural style of movement was taught to Mr. Swoger by Henry Able, and what Jim taught to his hundreds of students in the many years of his teaching. At one time the House of Enchantment was the largest magic manufacturing facility in the world supplying many customers with the latest and greatest. |

| Hundreds of inventions and effects have been developed by Mr. Swoger. In the sixty odd years he manufactured magic commercially one can argue he put out more effects then any other single person.
Ed Mellon befriended Mr. Swoger in the fifties. Ed was a top notch inventor of mentalism effects. Together they invented and produced a number of unique and powerful effects that we are reproducing at the new shop. Right up to the very end Jim was thinking up new ideas and lending his expert advice to us here at the shop. |

James Wesley Swoger, born January 26 1918, died November 2 2006 I.B.M membership # 8087, SAM membership #4510. he was an accomplished illusionist, sleight of hand artist, ventriloquist and builder. He became interested in magic when he was six. One of his older brothers showed him a magic trick and he was hooked. His father owned a music store, manufactured the Swoger electric organ & supplied many Vaudeville acts with sheet music for their shows. This gave Jim a backstage pass to Vaudeville at an early age. He watched all eight acts at one theater then saw eight more at four others every week for several years. At the age of eight, Jim met Houdini, backstage before a show, and talked with him an hour and a half. What I am going to do with Jims magic and memorabilia. I have inherited all of Jims magic, tools and memorabilia. Currently I am working (starting several years ago) to make the ultimate tribute to one of the founding fathers of commercial magic production and sleight of hand artistry. I plan to put out a DVD with hundreds of historical letters written to and from Jim, and others, that will open your eyes. You will see what really happened when a new trick was invented, who made it, how it was sold and who made the prototype. You will appreciate the relationship between the "old time" magic dealers and how close everyone was. These were different times where people pulled together to help on another, not like today where tricks are ripped off an hour after someone makes it. If you are a collector this DVD and / or book will become a very important tool in research. I plan to add footage of Jim performing, hence the DVD format, but there is a possibility that this could become a book and DVD set. There are currently several hundred letters that you will find spellbinding. The only way to be first on the list for this effort is to Email me with a request to add your Email address to my list. I can not say when it will be done, it might take a year or longer. You have no idea how many pages, articles, pictures ect. I have to sort through while doing my regular manufacturing. You really have no idea unless you actually saw it yourself at one of Jims homes or shops. It is a bitter sweet task but I owe it to the magic community to make this monumental reference available and to create a tribute to one of the greatest producers of magical apparatus the world will never see again. Please add you name to the list, share a story of what Jim Swoger meant to you or contact me for any other reason. |
